Washington, D.C–
There have been quite a few times when people say that one player makes a team and its clear that the Georgetown Hoyas are struggling without Thomas Sorber in the line-up.
Sorber, who had season ending surgery this week, clearly was that X factor for the Hoyas this season. Without him in the line-up, the Hoyas have not been able to find the same synergy with Sorber and forced Head Coach Ed Cooley to try quite a few line-up combinations and tonight… it wa clear that none of them really worked.
The Hoyas were down big 39-22, heading to the intermission and thanks to 19.2% shooting and nine turnovers in the first 20 minutes, Marquette was holding Georgetown to just 0.65 points per possession at that point. How many games can you win the Big East, let alone college basketball with those types of percentages.
The Hoyas did have a bit of a run late in the second half, outscoring the Golden Eagles 28-16 in the final 12 minutes, but being down by as much as 28 points in the first half was just too much for the Hoyas to handle.
The lone highlight of the game came from Micah Peavy, who scored 15 pts on 5-11 shooting (1-3 from three), Peavy is averaging 16.4 points per game, hitting 47% of his shots and 37% from deep. In February, Peavy averaged 24.2 points per game, highlighted by a 30-point performance against Providence College.
“First, I thought we played one of the more connected teams in our league, if not the country, with their experience,” Hoyas Head Coach EdCooley said at a postgame press conference.
“I didn’t think we had a physical approach today,” Cooley said. “We gave up 73% from two. It was a layup fest.”
