Washington, D.C–
When Hoyas Head Coach Ed Cooley took the job on the Hilltop, he made a strong statement that he was going to bring back the glory days of Georgetown basketball… but it would take time. While there was no certain time frame as to when they would return to the days that most fans remember under the Thompson era, tonight’s 93-72 victory over Providence, reminded us… those days aren’t too far away.
If there was one thing that Ed Cooley could have done in 2 years as Hoyas Head Coach, it would have been able to take that victory over his former team sooner than later, well tonight was that night.. a shorthanded Hoyas team that may have played their best game in over 2 years with one player carrying a huge load on his shoulders the entire game, Micah Peavy.
Peavy, who finished the night with career best 30 points, seemed to have find a balance of scoring and solid defense combo that had not been consistent for most of the season.
With 30 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and six steals, Peavy is the first Division I player to reach all four numbers in a game since 2014.
Jayden Epps racked up 18 points, Drew Fielder had 17 and Jordan Burks added 13 as the Hoyas (16-10, 7-8 Big East) won their third straight home game.
Bensley Joseph made four 3-pointers and finished with 25 points, Justyn Fernandez notched 11 points and Jayden Pierre posted 10 for the Friars (12-15, 6-10), which lost five of their last six games.
After the game Cooley commented on the state of his team and where they are going.
“I’m really, really proud of our men. A year ago today, I think we were 1-13 in the league. It’s a process to build a program. It’s a process to reestablish an identity, getting away from the past and coming into the future. For all the coaches who have taken over these programs, it’s not where you’re at, it’s where you’re going. Little by little, we’ll continue to show progress, growth and development. I couldn’t be more excited to be connected with Lee Reed, and I appreciate him for bringing me here to Georgetown to continue to build this program back to national prominence,” said Cooley.
Georgetown returns to action on Sunday, February 23 as the Hoyas travel to Omaha, Nebraska to face the Creighton Bluejays.
