Washington, D.C–

It may have been Juan Dixon the National Champion vs Patrick Ewing the National Champion, but tonight the battle of better teams went to the Hoyas with a 76-60 victory over Coppin State.

For the Hoyas, they got a career night from Jesse Govan with 26 points, but it was anything but easy for Ewing’s squad tonight, as they struggled to find much offense outside of Govan and were extremely lucky that Coppin State missed some huge shots from outside giving the Hoyas the ball back in transition for easy buckets.

Karron Davis led the way for Dixon’s squad from Baltimore with 20 points, 10 of which came from the free throw line.

For the Hoyas, they improved to 6-0 on the season while Coppin fell to 0-8. They next face Howard on Tuesday night at Capital One Arena, but will have some work to do against a squad that is significantly better than Coppin, who at times looked very confused on the offensive end with the pressure defense by the Hoyas.

“I thought we made a few mistakes tonight, said Hoyas Coach Patrick Ewing. You have to give Juan and his guys lots of credit, they hit some big shots to keep then close in the second half before Jesse took over and helped us back to a 10 point lead with over 10 minutes remaining.”

The layup by Trey Dickerson at the 7:55 mark of the second half gave the Hoyas a 56-46 lead, this is as close as Coppin State would come the remainder of the night.
