Washington, D.C–
Over the past two seasons, Hoyas Head Coach Ed Cooley talked about bringing back the Georgetown legacy… but, as we know that has been a tough struggle during this time. However, in year three, it appears that he has a team that can make something happen this season and he proved it again knocking off Clemson, 79-74, their second power five school in two weeks.
KJ Lewis scored 17 of his 26 points in the second half, Malik Mack had 16 points and seven assists, in what has been one of the better-balanced offensive spreads in a long time.
Vince Iwuchukwu scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half for Georgetown and Caleb Williams added 13. The Hoyas went 25 of 32 from the free-throw line, while Clemson made 14 of 20 attempts.
Carter Welling led the Tigers with 14 points off the bench on 5-for-8 shooting, while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists.
Even though Clemson had a bit of size advantage as Georgetown continued to have foul trouble in the second half, with Iwuchukwu in foul trouble, Cooley continued to go with him late in the game and it proved to work out. The transfer from St. Johns is showing Hoyas fans that he is going to be a solid option for Cooley off the bench, something Hoyas have missed the past two years.
The Hoyas are 4-0 to start the season for the first time since the 2017-18 season. This the second victory over Clemson since their only meeting back in 2004.
Georgetown has a week off before they play another non-conference game against Wagner on November 22nd.
