Washington, D.C–
After a disappointing trip to Florida for Ed Cooley and his Hoyas, tonight was the first chance before conference play gets going to rebound into the win column. While the game was a lot closer at the end, the 90-81 victory had the Hoyas dominating for most of the game.
The Hoyas have had some balanced scoring this season, but it was nights like tonight where all five starters were in double figures led by Caleb Williams with 18 points.
Williams also had eight rebounds for the Hoyas (6-2). KJ Lewis scored 17 points and added five rebounds. Julius Halaifonua finished with 16 points. Malik Mack scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half.
Georgetown had a few scares from the Retrievers who cut into the Hoyas lead to start the second half and were down by just 4 points before the Hoyas opened on a 17-0 run to really put away UMBC the remainder of the night.
UMBC had some gas left in the tank, trimming the deficit to single digits with 2:09 to play before falling by nine.
Georgetown will have a couple of days to look at tonight’s offensive output before heading to face a very tough UNC team for the first time since the 2007-08 season when the Hoyas got the best of the Heels in the NCAA Tournament in East Rutherford.
