Washington, D.C–

Coming into tonight’s match-up against DePaul, Ed Cooley and the Hoyas had a few odds stacked against them without Thomas Sorber and Jayden Epps. But the odds still favored the Hoyas. What they didn’t know the Blue Demons who stood at 0-7 coming into tonight, had been rolling the dice all season looking for that first conference win and tonight it was the Hoyas that gave them just that.

What is hard to believe that the Hoyas found themselves down early in this game and by more than 10 points on quite a few occasions.

The Blue Demons would push the lead to 12 before a Fielder triple brought the crowd to its feet as the Hoyas closed the gap to single digits. Caleb Williams drained his jumper and Drew Fielder made his second of a pair of free throws to make it a two-possession game (55-49) with 7:49 to play.

The Hoyas didn’t show much more offense until Drew Fielder caught fire and helped the Hoyas to just a two-point deficit with 2:10 remaining in the game.

One thing that is for sure for the Hoyas the offensive struggles and the ability to have a big man see the floor like Sorber was missing tonight. Whether he plays on Monday with his hand is a game time decision and there was no real timetable for his return from the Georgetown medical staff tonight prior to the start of the game.

As the second half clock ticked away you could see some of the frustration from Cooley on how DePaul was able to get in the paint and force the Hoyas into a few key mistakes in the final 5:00 in the second half.

“DePaul has been knocking at the door now for about a month with their team. I’m very happy that Coach Holtmann is in our league. He does a great job and his kids played very well so credit to them. Obviously, our injuries are really catching up to us here. We have got to be better. Hopefully we can get healthy quick. We have a really quick turnaround again with Villanova, so we’ll have a quick, scout and walkthrough practice on Sunday to get prepared,” said Cooley

Layden Blocker scored 14 points for DePaul while shooting 4 for 8 (2 for 3 from 3-point range) and 4 of 4 from the free-throw line. N.J. Benson shot 5 of 6 from the field and 1 of 3 from the free-throw line to finish with 12 points. The win snapped a five-game skid for the Blue Demons.
