Washington, D.C–
To say that our staff is passionate about food, well that might be an understatement. One way to describe our last 20 years of adventures around the nation with different foods and sampling, is find the best of the best, but this weekend we stayed a little closer to home and checked out the amazing Metro DC Cooking Show to see the best of the best from around the area.
Despite the so called snowstorm hitting the area on Saturday, foodies alike packed the exhibit hall of the Washington Convention Center and had the chance to see some of the top celebrity chefs as well as sample some of the best BBQ restaurants and sauces along with various spirits from Maryland and Virginia.
With the chance for patrons to vote on Top BBQ and sauces with a portion of the proceeds to benefit So Others Might Eat, the food definitely disappoint. We are happy to report our top choice in the BBQ sauce department, Jadean’s Smokin 6O from outside of Richmond, Virginia captured an award for the Top Sauce on Saturday. Local favorite Hill Country BBQ kept the brisket just how we like it, Texas Style. Those 86 year old old guys from Carolina, White Swan BBQ and Chicken, kept the Carolina Pulled Pork as good as it has ever been in a martini glass.
Later in the afternoon, Guy Fieri, presented on stage his award winning skills and then signed copies of his book to a sold out group of over 300 fans.
On Sunday, a packed James Beard Foundation stage was home to local icon and nationally renowned celebrity chef Jose Andres, who prepared his salt crusted whole fish to the delight of fans, all while wearing his I am Immigrant shirt, possibly poking a little fun at President Trump. He did make a few comments during the presentation to the delight of the crowd referencing both sides of Congress in regards to his recipies not going always as planned.
Whether you came to sample food from one of the many vendors, there was so much variety on hand. From cheeses, to pies to protein based coffee drinks, there was something for everyone.
