College Park, MD–
Just as there has been in few games this season where the first half was the best offense we have seen, there have been quite a few games where you wonder what Buzz Willaims was thinking in the second half. Tonight was just another one of those toss up games that ended with the Terps being on the lopsided second half of things.
The Terps went on an early run and were able to build a solid lead but couldn’t contain it midway through the first half. The huge problem for the Terps was they failed to get scoring whey they needed to and that allowed the Hoosiers to come right back in the game.
Maryland went for over four minutes with no sense of offensive cohesion, and they didn’t make a field goal for over six minutes, allowing Indiana to go on a 10-0 run.
The Terps would go on another mini run at 6-0 and this would limit the Terps from pulling way out of range, but they again struggled to score. The lack of ability to contain on the interior, put the Terps down by five at halftime. Maryland didn’t have a 3-pointer or an assist until its final possession of the first half, when Andre Mills knocked down a 3-pointer, assisted by Solomon Washington.
Elijah Saunders led the Terps (7-8, 0-4 Big Ten) with a season-high 16 points against the Hoosiers, 10 of which came in the opening half. He shot 4-of-4 from the free throw line and grabbed 7 rebounds on Wednesday night.
One thing we saw tonight in the Terps lack of offense other than Saunders, was there was no real go to second player. What has Happened to the Diggy Coit we saw starting the season? His three point depth has gone missing and perhaps is one of the reasons that the Terps have fallen to 0-4 in the conference. In, fact the Terps have lacked any offensive power since the loss to the Hoyas.
After the game, Terps Head Coach Buzz Williams tried to offer up a few answers as to what might have gone wrong tonight.
“We just fouled too much and gave them too many shot attempts and offensive rebounds, said Williams.”
Maryland has a few days to try and figure out what’s wrong before the California road trip. Next up UCLA on Saturday night.
