College Park, MD–
It’s clear that most people like to eat around the thanksgiving holiday and today against Bucknell, the Terps continued eat on offensive knocking off Bucknell, 91-67.
The Terps capitalized on getting the offense going early and put Bucknell in a deep hole right from the tip that concluded with 15-2 run, extended it to 25-7 with 10:38 left and led 51-28 at the break. The Terrapins led by at least 16 points the entire second half, which included runs of 12-0 and 9-0. Tafara Gapare scored the 10 straight points during the second-half run.
“One of the things we are doing a better job this year is forcing a lot of turnovers and capitalizing on those turnovers. It allows us to continue to press on multiple possessions. Last year, we pressed one out of every five possessions. We’re pressing four possessions in a row and that is going to wear opposing teams down,” said Terps Head Coach Kevin Willard.
Derik Queen had another solid game with 15 points and eight rebounds. After this game, Queen is averaging 16.2 points per game over the first 6 games of the season.
Julian Reese added 14 points and Selton Miguel scored 13 for Maryland. Gapare, a Georgia Tech transfer, reached double-figure scoring as a Terp for the first time. The Terrapins shot 50% from the field with three 3-pointers apiece by Gapare and Miguel.
With the victory today the Terps improve to 6-1 on the season and it appears that the Terps are ready for Big Ten action as they have finally figured out how to use both Reese and Queen to their benefit and it is going to cause a lot of problems with both on the court at the same time.
Maryland returns after the holiday and will face Alcorn State on Sunday.
