College Park, MD–
Today was a huge day in College Park. The Terp mens basketball team closed out as Big Ten champions and the womens team were able to do the same today in Indianapolis over Ohio State, which concludes their best season since they won the National Championship. Can they do it again this season?
If the Terps plan on making it to the Final Four this year they more than likely will have to face a loaded Oregon team lead by Sabrina Ionescu, who is bound to take her team all the way. Just like that squad that won it all, the Terps have been on point the past few weeks and destroying teams by 30 and 40 points again. If that isn’t tournament ready, I don’t know what is!
Maryland put five players in double figures, and Stephanie Jones led the way with 18 points, while freshman Ashley Owusu added 17 off the bench. Shakira Austin (14 points), Taylor Mikesell (12 points) and Blair Watson (11 points) also played key contributing roles in the balanced Terps attack.
The Terps (27-4) entered the postseason ranked No. 6 nationally in the Associated Press Top 25.
“I can’t say more about this group of girls and their effort over the past few weeks. The energy on and off the court is amazing, said Terps Head Coach Brenda Frese. “We can enjoy this moment for a few, but we all know what we have to do this week to stay focused when they show who our tournament opponents will be by the weekend.”
