Washington, D.C–
Before the game started it was questionable at best as to whether Elena Delle Donne would play with her broken nose suffered in the last game, at the start, we knew she was out and so was some of the Mystics offense in the 91-68 loss to the Mercury.
Defensively the Mystics could not contain Brittney Griner (25), DeWanna Bonner (22), and January (18) who combined for 65 points. Of Bonner’s 22 points, 12 came from three-pointers. When the three of these players are on target, they could be one of the best, if not the best team in the WNBA. When the Mystics have all of their players on the court, they are the better team, just not today.
“We just could not find the right offensive combination for their three players,” said Mystics Head Coach Mike Thibault.
Another problem for the Mystics was the absence of the usually consistent Kristi Toliver, who only put up six shots, making three ending the game with seven points. She shot two three-pointers, knocking down only one of them.
This is the first time we have really seen the Mystics struggle offensively as they have without Delle Donne and Emma Meesseman, who both are expected to be back when they face the Aces on Friday night.
