We have seen some wild finishes in Mystics history, but today, this ending was one for the ages and one that every one of those players on both sides of the ball was ready to end sooner than later.
This game which finished in not one, or two, or even three overtimes, but four overtimes with the Mystics emerging victorious 124-123 in what would be the second longest overtime game in WNBA history.
What is even more historic in this game today was this was the second time in history that it was a record game involving the Mystics, in which they now are 2-0 in those games.
Again, much has to be said about this young Mystics team who seem to have found a leader in Sonia Citron to carry them to any finish line they will need this season. Citron finished with 32 points followed by Kiki Iriafen with 27 points and 11 rebounds. It would be hard not to argue that Citron should be a starter in the 2026 WNBA All Star game on July 24th in Chicago.
The 247 total points between the two teams shattered the previous record of 236 points between the Indiana Fever and Phoenix Mercury in Sept. 2009. This stood in the Guiness Book of World Records until today.
While the Fire may be the new kid on the block this season, they certainly do not play like their 8-12 record on the season and its led by players such as Carla Leite, who banked in a 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime and also led Portland with 32 points. Sarah Ashlee Barker scored 25 and Megan Gustafson added 20 for the Fire.
The Mystics will have plenty of time to relax from this battle of the ages today, as they don’t play again until they meet the Dream on Friday.
