Nike Golf has released yet another gem of a shoe this past week with the Lunar line: the Nike Lunar Mont Royal and the Lunar Waverly.
We tested both the Lunar Waverly and the Mont Royal over the past few weeks. We also wore the golf shoes while we covered the Quicken Loans National tournament. While you would not normally be running from hole to hole in these shoes, we must say that chasing golfers around a course can be demanding when trying to get the best shot. Both the Waverly and the Mont Royal perform more like an all-around training shoe, rather than most typical shoes on the golf market.
The cork sock liners are amazing on inner comfort and definitely provide more than ample cushion for all that extra walking if you game should happen to be a little bit off. They also felt great in the wet conditions. We experienced rainy conditions one of the days of the Quicken Loans tournament, as heavy storms the night before the opening round left some hefty puddles around Congressional Country Club.
Both pairs of the new shoes draws praise from the Nike family and based on our testing we could see just how the designers feel about this release.
“The Lunar Waverly and Lunar Mont Royal were really inspired by classic Nike footwear styles, and we adapted those designs for athletes who want a golf shoe with versatile appeal,” says Carl Madore, Nike Golf Innovation Design Lead. “These are shoes with incredible performance technology that are great for playing 18 holes or wearing before or after the round, too. You can hit balls at the driving range on your lunch break without ever changing your shoes. These styles are modeled after some of Nike’s first shoes but modernized to perform specifically for our sport.”
Taking a bit of a fashion-forward approach of the shoe line, Nike Golf shoes are designed a bit less bulky than traditional golf shoes have been over the years. The Waverly we tested comes with a bright yellow molded bottom and yellow accents pop out of the lace eyelets. We added the yellow laces to match and it really made the shoe pop and noticed by others.
The Lunar Waverly was created through a concerted effort between Nike Golf and Nike Sports Research Lab and features waffle traction lugs that are reminiscent of Nike’s earliest shoes. Other features include Dynamic Flywire technology that provides outstanding lateral support, premium waterproof full-grain leather uppers, anti-microbial cork sock liners, and full-length Lunarlon foam cushioning.
The Lunar Mont Royal is a nod to homage of the Nike Montreal, which was introduced in 1975 as Steve Prefontaine’s signature shoe. Featuring the same famous color pattern and running-style design as Prefontaine’s model, the Mont Royal is built with Lunarlon foam in the heel for extreme cushioning and a traditional Nike waffle sole for excellent grip in a variety of turf conditions.
