Bethesda, MD–
For one 22 year old golfer named Rory McIlroy, the one thing that came to his mind was not to self destruct in one of the biggest golf tournaments, no self destruction, only destruction of the scorecard as he dominated the course at Congressional today finishing with a blistering -16 under and capturing the 2011 U.S Open title.
After falling apart in the Masters the media we left wondering if McIlroy would have a repeat at Congressional, in fact this wasn\’t a repeat of anything, it was writing his own name in the golf record book.
“I felt like I got over the Masters pretty quickly. I kept telling you guys that, and I don\’t know if you believed me or not. But here you go,” McIlroy said, gesturing to the shiny prize on the table. “Nice to prove some people wrong.”
McIlroy now owns the scoring records for 36, 54 and 72 holes at the toughest test in golf and he became only the third player to break 70 in all four rounds of the US Open.
McIlroy finished eight shots ahead of Jason Day, whose score of 8-under 276 would have been enough to win 26 of the last 30 U.S. Opens.
