College Park, MD–
It appears that the fire has returned to College Park with the Maryland women’s hoops team. I am talking about that one where opponents wonder how they are going to stay competitive walking through the doors at Xfinity Center. Today was another one of those moments for Towson.
Maryland jumped out early in this game, including a 33-point opening quarter, the team’s highest point total in a quarter all year. Most of this by Kaylene Smikle.
Smikle would finish the game with her 4th straight 20 point plus effort today, finishing the game with 21 points.
After the game Smikle was asked about what has made her get off to such a hot start to the season and what it means for the upcoming Big Ten schedule.
“Consistency is something that I take pride in,” Smikle said. “I don’t want to come out one day and have good game and not the next day.”
Maryland recorded 27 assists, indicating their impressive ball movement throughout the game.
Today also marked a special day for Maryland forward Allie Kubek, scoring her 1000th point against her former team in Towson. It was also special for her as she helped Maryland defeat Towson for the 10th consecutive time dating back to 2010.
“Allie’s a tremendous scorer for us,” coach Brenda Frese said. “Being able to have that inside, outside presence … especially getting those plays inside, as well as when she’s back to shooting the ball consistently from the 3-point line.”
Today also marked another notch on the records list for Shyanne Sellers. She moved to a tie for 30th on the program’s all-time scoring list with 1284 with Belinda ‘Boe’ Pearman (1981-84). Next on the list at 29th is Ashley Owusu (2020-22) with 1,286.
Next up for the Terps:
Maryland will host Saint Francis (PA) at XFINITY Center on Sunday, Nov. 24. The game will tip-off at 1 p.m. and air on Big Ten Plus.
