College Park, MD–
There have been quite a few games this season where you had to wonder what Terps Head Coach Brenda Frese said at halftime in the locker room? This evening was just another one of those games where whatever it was, her players go the message and the entire second half of the game was much different than the first.
One of those players who got the message was Sarah Te-Biasu who helped the Terps go on a 12-2 run in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
Norfolk State scored the game’s first seven points and led 32-30 at halftime, but Te-Biasu made a pair of 3-pointers to start a 30-point third quarter for Maryland. As fouls piled up on the Spartans — including a couple on 3-point shooters — the Terps made all 12 of their free throws that period and took an eight-point advantage into the fourth.
The Terps finally got a good consistent game out of Allie Kubek who finished with 16 points and 8 rebounds and perhaps one of her better games over the last few weeks. Kubek was also a huge part of getting players such as Diamond Johnson who finished 4 for 10 from 3-point range along with Kierra Wheeler’ 20 points to lead the way for Norfolk State.
After the game Terps Head Coach praised the play of Norfolk State who won 30 games this season and won the MEAC Conference Championship coming into today’s game.
Diamond Johnson is a really, really good player,” Frese said. “She showed that throughout the entire game.”
Maryland will try for its 12th Sweet 16 appearance under Frese, facing No. 5 seed Alabama on Monday.
