College Park, MD–
After a disappointing loss to Georgetown Hoyas, the Terps went back to basics tonight in College Park as they put together a solid offensive output to knock off Alcorn State, 84-64.
Maryland continues to struggle in their inability make shots from three-point range. They entered this game tonight with a Big Ten low of 28 percent. Combine this with some sloppy ball handling tonight, the Terps’ 19-point lead dwindled to six points. Alcorn State embarked on a 17-4 run to close out the first half, making it 33-26 at the break.
This game was quite a bit closer than it actually was in the final score. In fact, it took a 11-1 run by the Terps in the second half to put this one away.
Pharrel Payne showed again tonight that he is going to be pivotal part of the success of this offense this season and finished the night with 22 points tonight.
“A credit to those guys. … We had four turkeys [three straight stops] in the first half. We had seven turkeys in the second half,” head coach Buzz Williams said. “I thought we did a better job in closing the game.”
