College Park, MD–
As Terp fans left SECU Stadium tonight, many of them had to wonder what actually went wrong in the fourth quarter of this game.
After a dominating defensive game for three quarters, the Maryland Terps allowed the Washington Huskies to completely take control of the game and mount a 21-point, three touchdown come back to give the Terps their first loss of the season, 24-20.
Let’s talk a little about what happened in final frame of the game! The defense by Maryland failed miserably. They had been able to control the passing game and forced UW to the ground for most of the first half… then this.. a 80-yard, 11-play drive that included 17-yard and 26-yard completions to Denzel Boston, who ended the game with six catches for 71 yards receiving, and was capped by a 1-yard touchdown plunge by senior running back Jonah Coleman, who added 57 yards rushing and 135 all-purpose yards, with 3:21 remaining.
The Huskies (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten), who basically were left for dead most of the first half trailed 20-0 with four minutes remaining in the third quarter. What is shocking about the fourth quarter comeback is the deficit of 20 points or more for is just the seventh time in UW program history that it has happened. On top that stat, UW was able to do something that they have not done in almost 5 years, Nov. 28, 2020, to be exact, when it beat Utah 24-21 despite trailing 21-0, and the first time UW has done it on the road since Oct. 9, 1993 when it beat California 24-23 in Berkeley, Calif., after falling behind 20-0 and 23-3.
Malik Washington threw for 219 yards and a score on 30 completions on Saturday, but there were times that he showed that he is still a true freshman quarterback. His 1,257 career passing yards are the most by a Power Conference true freshman through five career games since 2019 and tied for the third-most since 2015.
The Terps don’t have a lot of time to get things right before Nebraska comes to College Park next Saturday and then they head back on a long road trip to face UCLA on October 18th.
SECU Stadium drew 46,185 fans today, the first sell out since 2023.
