College Park, MD–

Going into the game against Minnesota tonight, the Terps were riding the momentum from knocking off #22 ranked UCLA, but with the way they played the first half, you wouldn’t have thought this was the same team.

To give you an idea of how lopsided this game was in favor of Minnesota most of the game, it wasn’t until Ja’Kobi Gillespie sank a 3-pointer from the corner with 13 minutes left in the second half to give Maryland its first lead, 49-46, since it was 14-13. That’s a long time for the Terps to be on the wrong side of the scoring.

From this point it seemed if the Terps had found an offensive groove to get the ball to Derik Queen, who scored 18 of his 27 points in the second half and really challenged Minnesota to find more than one person to guard Queen.

Dawson Garcia led Minnesota (8-9, 0-6) with 21 points despite battling foul trouble in the second half. Freshman Isaac Asuma and Lu’Cye Patterson each scored 15 points.

Minnesota stuck around the final minute and Garcia scored a layup with five seconds left, making it 75-71 after the Gophers trailed by double digits, but the comeback effort came too late thanks to turnovers and fouls.

“Give Minnesota credit,” said Terps Head Coach Kevin Willard. “I thought they were physical, and we’re really making it difficult to get the ball inside. Sometimes you just got to be nice and simple and get to your best players in a two-man game. They were really trying to get the ball out of Ja’Kobi’s hands, so it was just a little bit more pick and pop and let Derik kind of create from that elbow area where he’s really good.”

Next up for the Terps: a road visit to Northwestern on Thursday night.
