College Park, MD–
There have been quite a few games where these “lesser” opponents have come into College Park and the Terps have let them stay in the game during the first half with lack of deceive offense and defensive mistakes allowed Alcorn State to stay in this game for most of the first half.
It didn’t take long for the Terps to get going after about 11 minutes had passed and it was easy to see why Alcorn was 0-9 on the season so far.
Terps Head Coach Kevin Willard took a timeout shortly after Alcorn had built a 4-point lead which then led to a 25-4 run that included a 4 for 5 shooting effort after starting the game 1 for 6 from long range.
Derik Queen hit 6 of 9 from the field and was 8-for-8 from the line to lead Maryland. Julian Reese was 10 of 12 from the line with 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks while Selton Miguel knocked down 4 of 7 from behind the arc. Each contributed 14 points. Rodney Rice contributed 12 points with five assists and DeShawn Harris-Smith chipped in 10 points off the bench.
The Braves shot 21 of 67 from the field (31.3%), including 5 of 20 from distance, and was 11 of 17 from the free throw line.
The biggest note of the day for the Terps was that they again shot over 50 percent from the field this game. Maryland finished the game with a blistering 57% shooting from the floor (hitting 32 of 56), knocked down 11 of 23 shots from behind the three-point arc and converted 21 of 24 shots from the free throw line.
“I think we know where we stand going into conference play. There are a few more things I would like to work on before then, but I liked what I saw during that first half run by us today,” said Willard after the game.
Maryland opens its Big Ten conference play on Wednesday night 12/4 against Ohio State.
