Today fans got their final look at the PGA Tour for the week… and now so did we. We being the remainder of the media and essential personnel allowed to attend Round 2 of the players.
At 6:45pm, the PGA, sent out the notice how they would continue without fans over the weekend and that the media would only be able to cover the action from behind the ropes. By 930pm, many of our phones, were hit with a second message that the tournament was now cancelled.
Has the PGA just communicated this to us a few hours prior we possibly could have found arrangements to leave Jacksonville early, but now we are forced to find options like everyone else over the weekend. This will go down as one for the record books of something we have yet to see in 22 years of providing tour coverage.
The cancellation will continue all the way through the Valero Open and then the tour will reassess what to do with the Masters the week after.
Commissioner Jay Monahan is expected to address the media on Friday morning at 8am. We will have more details on the decision and why they waited so long after many of the other sanctioning bodies decided to cancel earlier in the day.
