Indianapolis, IN–
Nothing like a trip back to the home of the Indy 500, Pacers and Colts and home of some great food experiences. While it has been a few years since we have featured something from this area, we needed to find a new spot for dinner. Just like many suggestions sent to us over the previous 20 plus years, Tony’s of Indianapolis came in and we decided to stop in and see why people have been talking about this place as one of the best to dine in Indy. The experience was well worth it during current times of uncertainty of some restaurants.
One thing we saw in Tony’s was they were trying to create the best experience in the restaurant to keep people feeling safe and distant. It however does create a few awkward table settings that has people sitting super close to their large party room, with people entering and exiting right next to their dining experience. Our table was in the middle of higher traffic area for staff, so it did make it bit less enjoyable then our traditional three to four times a month regular steak dining at other local D.C spots, but their steak made up for it.
Tony’s has long standing reputation of being on the best steakhouses in three cities, Indianapolis, Lexington and Cincinnati of striving for amazing service, perfect food and place to take that special one on a first date. We looked around the room and saw exactly that. Nothing short of amazing on the prep and delivery.
“I knew early on that my place in life was to serve amazing food,” said Tony Ricci, founder of all three restaurants. “We focus on fresh, local and organic ingredients in all of our items prepared in house.”
There are six different appetizer options to sample as well which include some of the seafood options like the hand battered and soaked in buttermilk Calamari along with offerings like fresh PEI Oysters and Seared Tuna Ahi. All tough choices, but we opted for the Calamari and their extra prep made this much different then traditional battered ones you might find anywhere else.
Their menu boasts quite a few entree options, including five different pasta options, which tend to be a “dying breed” for a place the focuses on steak as their main entree . The pasta Rig-a -Tony is a combination of steak and amazing house prepared pasta with 6 ounces of prime beef mixed into a San Marzano tomato sauce topped with Pecorino Romano. Great alternative for those not craving a full amazing steak.
Two steaks that we did sample, the 9 ounce filet and the 14 house prime cut New York Strip are prepared to order with a crusted finish in a 1800 degree oven and are served with fresh onion tangle on the side of the huge slabs of in house cut beef.
You can’t have your steak without some of their amazing side options, which serve up to 3 people per table. The Five Cheese Mac and the Bourbon Whipped Mashed Potatoes serviced with a toasted marshmallow.
While Tony’s will certainly leave you more than full, you cant leave without trying some of their amazing desert options like the Vanilla Crème Brule which is popping with amazing vanilla flavor and caramelized perfectly on top.
Overall, we think Tony’s still is one of the best options when it comes to a unique steak experience in Downtown Indianapolis and with all of the selections within walking distance of Circle Center and local hotels, Tony’s is one of the more unique ones that has different menu items and takes their steak preparation to an entire different level.
