Washington, D.C–
For the first time this season, the Washington Spirit found an opponent that was able to sneak away from Audi Field with just one goal to grab a victory over the NWSL Champions this evening.
Despite coming into the match down several players, ACFC did well to show the inaugural win wasn’t a fluke and that this is a team that can hang with the best in the league.
There had been some skeptics that the ACFC roster wasn’t deep enough to compete with teams like the Spirit, but the team led by Christian Press, needed nothing more than one goal today by Press herself to secure a solid victory for the young team.
For the Spirit, Trinity Rodman had a couple looks at the goal, but was unable to connect anything in the seocnd half.
Last weekend’s loss to North Carolina in the Challenge Cup final ended a 20-game unbeaten streak in competitive matches across all competitions, and Sunday’s setback halted a 10-game regular season run.
“We definitely seemed a little lackluster, uninspiring,” goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury said. “It just didn’t look dangerous.”
