College Park, MD–
Maryland running back Wes Brown will be suspended for the first three games of the season, head coach DJ Durkin announced Wednesday at the team’s first media session.
While it’s the third suspension for Brown, who was expected to be one of Maryland’s top few backs, it amounts to a reduction of a previous disciplinary move last season by then-interim coach Mike Locksley, who suspended Brown for all of this season last November for an undisclosed violation of the school’s conduct code. Instead, the 6-foot, 217-pound senior will miss Maryland’s games against Howard, Florida International and Central Florida.
“We have to set a statement for where this team is going this season, said Durkin. We want Wes to get back on the field as soon as possible, but we have to do whats right for the school at the same time.”
In his absence, Maryland will turn primarily to graduate transfer Trey Edmunds and sophomore Ty Johnson. Brown’s suspension could also mean more snaps for some of Maryland’s three freshman running backs, Jake Funk, Lorenzo Harrison and LaDerrien Wilson.
