Washington, D.C–
After the last few days of talking about a trade the Wizards might conduct between thern and the Hawks, tonight it finally happened and perhaps the Wizards got their man in Trae Young in trade that sends CJ McCollum to Atlanta along with Corey Kispert for Young.
For the Wizards, this seems a like huge win as they basically gave up nothing for a player that was a NBA All Star. Kispert has spent quite a bit of time on the bench injured, so this could have very well been the best trade the Wizards have seen in quite a few years. One that can help this team now. not in three years, which that young core might get going sooner than later.
After this season, Young, a 2021-22 All-NBA selection, has a $49 million player option for 2026-27 after he notably did not get an extension from Atlanta this past summer.
McCollum is a free agent after this season and Kispert is under contract for at least the next 2 ¹/₂ seasons. He has club option for 2028-29.
Young, 27, has played in just 10 games and is averaging 19.3 points and 8.9 assists, both below his career averages of 25.2 and 9.8, respectively.
Baring any unforeseen circumstances, Young should be a catalyst to help in the rebuild within the next week.
