Washington, D.C–
Every day we hear more and more about how young this Wizards team is and that we should expect nights like tonight against the Sixers to happen this season. Well, what if you had this game well under control with a 16-point lead with 9:14 remaining? This is exactly what the Wizards did, but somehow through a mixture of mistakes and poor coaching decisions, the Sixers forced overtime and forced the Wizards to another loss, 139-134.
One of the most notable stats that sticks out about tonight’s game was that the Wizards scored 116 points through three quarters, but yet somehow managed to score just 16 points in the fourth quarter and also let the Sixers go on a 9-0 run in overtime to seal the victory.
Alex Sarr showed us tonight some of what he could be for this team… a threat all around the court and finished with 31 points in his best effort so far this season.
Despite what the Wizards were able to do the entire game, it was NBA scoring leader Tyrese Maxey that had his way with the Wizards defense when he wanted in the fourth quarter that helped him finish with 39 points and 10 assists.
One problem the Wizards didn’t have to deal with late in the game was the presence of Joel Embiid, who finished with 25 points, 18 of those came in first half. It was the other big man Adem Bona that would be the guy who keyed this victory tonight for the Sixers.
Bona blocked four shots in the fourth quarter and another in OT and the dunk with 27.6 seconds remaining left Brian Keefe and the Wizards scratching their heads as to how they could have fallen so far from the lead in the fourth to their second straight loss at home.
Washington has the day off tomorrow, but it doesn’t get much easier as they travel to Oklahoma City for a match-up against the Thunder on Thursday night.
