Washington, D.C–

In a week of patriotic happenings in D.C… it was the USWNT that started the fireworks early in route to a 3-0 victory in a friendly match-up against Canada.

Winning games on set plays is not something that often happens in soccer and especially not in a friendly game but that was exactly how it went down tonight and guess who was part of the fireworks show?? Rose Lavelle.

Lavelle was responsible for starting what would be the second goal of the night on her corner kick to the center that was headed by Clarie Hutton giving USA a 2-0 lead.

USWNT scored all three goals from set plays — a free kick, a corner kick, and a throw-in. Lavelle was the anchor in 2 of the 3 goals scored and her leadership continues to show on this team.

“What more can we say about Rose, she just looks for all of us on the field and her veteran leadership is what makes this team so dangerous. I was glad to find myself in the right place on that kick and happy to get my first international goal on that play as well,” said Hutton.

Canada who seemed to struggle to find any offense in the first half with the USA defense getting to them anytime they had the chance to get close for a shot which resulted in quite a few turnovers.

After the game Canada Head Coach Casey Stoney was very critical of the way her team played tonight.

“Talk is cheap,” Stoney said. “We can keep talking about winning the World Cup, we can talk about the things that we are going to do. We can keep talking about what we’re going to do, or we can actually put things into action.”
