Washington, D.C–
If you would have told us that we would use setting records, winning and the Washington Wizards in one sentence on the same night, some might have said we were crazy… the reason why? Well perhaps winning just one game over the past month could have a lot to do with that.
Over the past two games, starting with the road game against the Bulls and tonight against the Hawks, the Wizards just looked like a different team. Tonight was just different all together; the Wizards came to play and made the Hawks look like the real laughingstock of the NBA in a 132-113 blowout victory.
The real star of the night was CJ McCollum, who set a Wizards franchise record with 12 threes made and was just 4 points short of a career high 50 points.
Washington also set another record early in this game with 45 points in the first quarter, the most in franchise history. If there was ever a night to breakout, tonight was it.
Alex Sarr was also a huge problem for the Hawks, as he scored 27 points and had 11 rebounds. This was his fourth double-double on the season.
Winning tonight also broke the 0’fer in Cup play since its inception.
While the Wizards starters carried much of the workload tonight, Corey Kispert showed how he can be an asset off the bench with 19 points. The bad news from this is that Kispert left the game with an apparent thumb injury. He will be evaluated tomorrow to see if he might miss any time.
Washington heads back on the road to Indiana on Friday night. Can they keep this same energy going forward? Based on these last two games, this is a different team and whatever was discussed in that players only meeting, the team has changed.
