College Park, MD–

While we are just a few days away from the start of the 2025-26 Maryland Women’s basketball season, the #10 ranked Terps showed tonight that they are ready for some real competition to start as the made quick work of the Division II Point Park Pioneers, 120-35.

I have seen quite a few basketball games by Brenda Frese’s team, but tonight this game was nowhere near close from start to finish. In fact, I even questioned why Frese would schedule an exhibition with a team like Point Peak as they had a total of 16 points at halftime.

The Terps had this game well under control as they took a 37-9 lead going into the second quarter.  This included the Terps going a sizzling 60 percent from the field and 36 percent from three-point range.

Newcomer and transfer from Indiana, Yarden Garzon, showed Terp fans that she is ready for her new home in the Big Ten hitting three first-quarter three pointers. Oluchi Okananwa hit for 19 points an Isimenme-Ozzy-Momodu had her first double-double as Terp with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

The story of this game was Frese’s players really took the Pioneers out of any offense they may have throughout the duration of the game and the ability to get any kind of decent shot didn’t even come to the fourth quarter.

Maryland’s bench scored a combined 73 points tonight. A good start that seems to have solved a big problem when the Terps had injuries last season and a thin bench in games when they needed some additional scoring.

“This team wants to play defense. They’re really connected. They play hard, so they like to wreak havoc,” said Terps Head Coach Brenda Frese.

Maryland has the weekend to tune-up for their first game of the season against Loyola on Monday night at 7pm from Xfinity Center. This will be the first of 7 games the Terps play at home to start the season before heading into the Thanksgiving holiday tournament.
